Written exams, marked in hours instead of weeks.
Alama reads handwritten and typed answers, marks them against your marking scheme and shows the reason for every mark. Teachers only review the answers the AI isn’t sure about.
Alama: both functions named and explained, matching the marking scheme.
Why marking takes longer than it should
The problems are familiar to every teacher who has carried a pile of scripts home. Alama is built around them.
Marking takes weeks
A teacher can spend whole weekends on one class set. Results reach students long after the lesson has moved on.
See how Alama helps2Two markers, two scores
Fatigue and personal judgement mean the same answer can earn different marks from different examiners.
See how Alama helps3Written answers are left out
Computer-based tests score objective questions instantly, but essays and theory still wait for a person.
See how Alama helps4Results come without insight
A list of scores doesn’t show which topics the class missed or what to reteach.
See how Alama helps5Scripts move around too much
Collecting, transporting and storing paper scripts costs money and creates openings for loss or tampering.
See how Alama helps6No record of why
When a parent or student questions a mark, there’s rarely a written reason to point to.

Alama works with the paper exams you already run, and with typed answers from computer-based tests.

Built for the teacher’s phone
Everything a teacher needs to mark a class set, from scanning to sign-off.

Who it’s for
One marking engine, set up for the way each institution runs exams.
Schools
Class tests, term exams and mock WAEC and NECO papers.
Teachers get their evenings back and students get results sooner.
Universities
Theory papers and continuous assessment across large classes.
Faster results and consistent grading between markers.
Exam bodies
High-volume marking of theory and essay papers.
A full audit trail, on-site marking and lower examiner costs.

Short answers here. The FAQ page has more.
What does Alama do?
Alama marks written exam answers. It reads handwritten or typed responses, scores them point by point against your marking scheme and explains every mark. Answers it is unsure about go to a teacher before results are released.
Does Alama replace teachers or examiners?
No. Alama does the first pass so teachers spend their time on the answers that need judgement. A teacher or examiner always approves the final result.
Can it read real student handwriting?
Alama is built for everyday school handwriting, including joined writing, crossed-out words and answers that run into the margin. When writing is too unclear to read confidently, the answer is flagged for a person.
Which subjects and question types does it support?
Short answers, structured theory questions and essays in subjects with a written marking scheme. During the pilot we are starting with Biology and English and adding subjects as we test them.
Do I need internet to use Alama?
Scanning works on a phone without internet. Marking runs in the cloud, and for exam centres with weak connectivity we are developing Alama Edge, a box that marks on-site.
How much does it cost?
The school pilot is free. After the pilot, schools pay a flat fee per student per term, and universities pay per script. See the pricing page for details.
